Journal of Pediatric Health Care Launches Special Edition Focused on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in Pediatric Healthcare

With health inequities remaining a pervasive issue when seeking out health care in the United States, it is essential that providers be aware of factors including but not limited to ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, or age to address possible implications individuals might face to access to high-quality health care. The Journal of Pediatric Health Care has published a special issue focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in pediatric health care to provide a closer look at how DEIB impacts pediatric health care.

“Drawing from the lessons of our history, the persistent shadow of injustices accentuates the imperative need for pediatric nurse practitioners to collectively work toward dismantling systemic oppression, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to attain their full potential for health and well-being, regardless of their race, religion, borders, or backgrounds,” said guest co-editor Asma A. Taha, PhD, RN, CPNPPC/AC, FAAN. “Championing diversity, equity and inclusion must extend beyond advocacy and translate into tangible support, empowering pediatric nurse practitioners as pivotal agents of change to illuminate a brighter, more equitable, and humane world for all.”

The special issue includes both solicited and invited papers on a range of topics and areas to address how DEIB affects pediatric patients as individuals in addition to their families, neighborhoods, communities, and society at large.

Co-editor Nutrena H. Tate, PhD, MBA, APRN, CPNP-PC, suggested that “during this evolutionary time of child health equity in our society, it is essential for pediatric advanced practice nurses and providers to understand the unique research and evidenced-based perspectives that inform the care we give to our patients and their families.”
