Official Statement on Declaration of Firearm Violence as a Public Health Crisis

The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) strongly supports U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy’s declaration that firearm violence in America has become a public health crisis. Our members — experts in pediatrics and advocates for children — have long witnessed the short- and long-term physical and mental health impact of firearm violence on our nation’s children, adolescents and young adults. Our organization has implored federal and state leaders to create impactful change to combat firearm violence and injury in children. This crisis affects children of all races, ethnicities, gender identity, religious affiliation and economic means.

“We are failing our nation’s youth by standing idly by while firearms are being used to threaten, injure or kill,” said NAPNAP President Dr. Regena Spratling. “By labeling the situation as a public health crisis, all of us – elected leaders, health care providers, law enforcement, educators, religious leaders – must now come together to develop and execute workable strategies to put an end to firearm violence.”

In its Position Statement on Prevention of Firearm Violence and Injury in Children, NAPNAP offers practice- and advocacy-related strategies to guide health care providers to become effective advocates to reduce or prevent firearm violence. Working with member experts, NAPNAP has developed and curated resources for APRNs caring for children and their fellow health care providers.

NAPNAP welcomes opportunities to collaborate with government agencies and peer organizations to implement solutions to save children’s lives and improve their mental well-being.
