NAPNAP Partners for Vulnerable Youth seeks to end labor, sex trafficking of youth with education and awareness

New York, June 17, 2019 – Pediatric healthcare providers in primary and urgent care clinics and hospitals in the U.S. frequently encounter children who are at risk for recruitment by human traffickers. Yet many times nurses, physicians and others providers are unaware of these red flags and how they differ from other adverse childhood events, such as abuse and neglect. NAPNAP Partners for Vulnerable Youth’s Alliance for Children in Trafficking (ACT) is launching 3-PARRT (Providers Assessing Risk and Responding to Trafficking), on-demand continuing education for all types of pediatric healthcare providers.

“Up to 87 percent of trafficking victims have encountered a healthcare professional without being identified,” said NAPNAP Partners for Vulnerable Youth Director Jessica Peck, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC, CNE, CNL, FAANP. “We’re launching these courses because we want to provide evidence-based resources to identify and assist victims, especially since victimization can begin in childhood.” While the courses are pediatric specific, the content is applicable to most trafficking victims.

The first course, Human Trafficking 101, educates participants about this $32 billion criminal industry and its prevalence in all sectors of U.S. society and nearly all communities. Participants learn how to recognize the signs of human trafficking in child victims and understand situations and challenges that make kids vulnerable to trafficking predators. Child Trafficking 102 educates and equips participants to identify potential victims of child trafficking in the clinical setting and provide appropriate, timely, safe interventions using principles of both trauma-informed and culturally responsive care. Child Trafficking 103 focuses on prevention of child trafficking. 3-PARRT is accredited for CE and CME and available on-demand at https://ce.napnap.org/3-parrt.

“To support widespread grassroots education, we recently launched a peer-to-peer training program where our partners can host a two-hour workshop to train their own ACT Advocates,” said Dawn Garzon Maaks, president of NAPNAP Partners. “All ACT Advocates are trained to deliver a fully vetted, standardized training to their healthcare professional peers.” ACT Advocates are required to take specified webinars from HEAL Trafficking and SOAR, which is produced by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Trafficking in Persons, in addition to 3-PARRT as prerequisites. ACT Advocates volunteer to deliver at least two peer training sessions annually and are part of a national speakers bureau.

Organizations interested in distributing 3-PARRT and hosting an ACT Advocate training should contact NAPNAP Partners. For more information, visit napnappartners.org.
