NAPNAP Applauds Study on APRNs and Patient Outcomes

Aug 02, 2011

NAPNAP is pleased to share an article to be published in the September/October 2011 issue of Nursing Economic$ which suggests that advanced practice RNs garner similar and in some ways better outcomes than their physician counterparts.

A systematic review was conducted to assess patient outcomes of health care provided by advanced practice registered nurses (nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and clinical nurse specialists). Sixty-nine studies were summarized for 28 aggregate outcomes. Results of this ground-breaking report indicate advanced practice registered nurses provide safe, high-quality, effective care; have an important role in improving the quality of patient care in the United States; and could help address concerns about whether care provided by APRNs can safely augment the physician supply to support reform efforts aimed at expanding access to care.

This special report is being published online ahead of the printed issue, and it is available for free on the Nursing Economic$ Web site.
